  • Face painting is a simple, effective and inexpensive way to dress up! Maybe you aren't allowed to wear costumes to your job... Paint your face! Many places will let you "dress up" by face painting. Some places such as bars and night clubs do not allow patrons to wear masks. Face painting avoids this hassle.

  • Use make-up instead of a mask. If you must wear a mask, wear one that fits and is breathable.

  • Eat a good dinner before leaving to trick or treat.

  • Wear a bright/light costume that fits well and is flame retardant.

  • Carry a flashlight and Glo stick. Heavy flashlights make good defense weapons!

  • Walk with adults. Older kids walk in groups with mapped paths in lit areas.

  • Establish a return home time and wear a watch.

  • Trick or treat between the hours of 6-9pm for best results.

  • Walk in well lit areas, in a neighborhood you know.

  • Use glo sticks onside pumpkins instead of candles. Not only are they safer than candles, but they will not "wilt" the pumpkin and help it to look better longer.

  • Have an adult smell and inspect ALL treats before eating. THIS IS A MUST!!!

  • Do not accept "homemade" treats & drinks except from friends and relatives. Make sure your parents approve of the offering before you accept it.

  • Do not go inside anyone's home!

  • Do not visit unlit homes or walk dark paths or alley-ways.

  • If you need help, scream "FIRE!!" People react better to "fire" than "help"...sad but true.

  • If someone wants to steal your candy, throw it at them and run! Its not worth being a victim of a violent act.

  • Keep all pets inside for the holiday.

  • While pets look cute dressed up in costume, it is not a good idea to take them trick-or-treating with you - leave them at home!! Chocolate is not good for dogs or cats and the holiday hustle can fray an animal's nerves.

  • Extinguish all candles before leaving home to Trick Or Treat.

  • If you are planning on not being home for treaters, leave porch light out. Do not leave a bowl of candy and assume that everyone will use the honor system. Let a neighbor who is passing out candy, pass yours out too.

  • Keep walkways and paths lit for treaters. Do not use candles. Keep light cords from tripping visitors.

  • Long flowing costumes may be at risk of catching fire; keep candles and objects using them off the ground and out of low lying areas.

  • Carry a cell phone or have change to call home.

  • Walk, don't run from home to home.

  • Cross streets only at corners. Do not walk between parked cars.

  • Clear your yard of all clutter and debris for treaters.

  • Mall "trick or treats" are insane but the loot can be plentiful.

  • Have a party instead, invite all your friends!
