Substitute candles with alternative lighting when possible. This cuts down on the risk for fire, room temperature and is generally cheaper than candles in the long run.
Purchase a see through or light colored shower curtain, vermillion red paint and a condiment squeeze bottle. Hang curtain outside or in well ventilated area. Fill the bottle with paint and squeeze along the top edge of the curtain, allowing paint to drip down, eventually off the curtain. Continue squeezing paint until bottle is empty. Allow curtain to dry overnight. Place osculating fan in front of the curtain to help with the drying process. Hang curtain in bathroom along with "blood-splattered" towels. Finish the look by using red lipstick to write creepy sayings on mirrors such as "redrum", "666", "Get Out", or "Helter Skelter". Creep out guests further by stuffing a dummy of your favorite slasher and placing it behind the curtain. Backlight the dummy for a silhouette effect if the curtain is a solid color. A dummy of "Mother" (PSYCHO) may be most appropriate in that event.
Record a continuous 60 or 90 minute cassette tape or a CD of your favorite spooky sounds, place in bathroom (preferably in tub or shower for echo effect) and play on low. Check every hour.
I love making mixed music CDs and for every party, I make special CDs. Create a second Halloween music disc set to give as a great door prize!!
Replace family photos or portraits with photos of villains or serial killers for a morbid effect.
Hollow small colorful gourds and mini pumpkins for use as candle holders! Arrange a variety of these in different sizes on a tray covered with fresh leaves. Use candles that drip for a great holiday look. Display is safe area away from fabric or decorations.
Use hay bales instead of chairs if outside.
Design your own original book jackets or look online for cover art to print. Borrow classic book titles from friends to create book jackets for a spooky decor touch. Classic spooky titles such as Frankenstein or stories by Poe are appropriate.
Rig the party entrance/exit door(s) with fake bats, spiders or snakes so that when they open, the scare "falls" into the room. Rig multiple lines for extra scares!
Build your own coffin table! Create an open coffin and line with material of choice. Red or black fabric is preferred. Then create or purchase a corpse prop or skeleton and place in coffin. Have a piece of glass cut for the coffin top, making it slightly larger than the coffin. Not only do you have a great table / conversation piece, but you have a place to store your corpse or skeleton.
Great soap molds can be found! Looks for molds that are bugs and other gross creatures. Dark colored soap products will look realistic in dark bathrooms and sink areas. Soap making can be a fun weekend project for the entire family and make great door prizes too!
Chains of any size make creepy garland. The more the better. Use clip on fans to animate chains and create clanking. Remember Hellraiser? Enough said.
Be sure to put classic horror flicks on any available TV screen. The more the better! You don't have to have the same image on all screens. Films with known characters are best. Black and white films offer dim lighting compared to newer, more colorful films. Suggested films: Halloween, The Excocist, Frankenstein (b/w classic). If you have two VCRs, record a montage of creepy video clips from a variety of favorite horror films...one scary scene after another!
Two different looks can be created by draping over furniture with dark fabric to hide stains, or use old looking fabric or sheets that are light in color, preferably antique white or light yellow. You can age fabric by "tea dying" it. Buy inexpensive tea bags. Add many bags to little boiling water (10 bags to 4 cups water). Let tea bags steep, then let fabric soak up tea water, lightly ring, wad up and let fabric dry. More bags/less water=darker stain. Wash fabric to lighten stain if desired.
Block external light into the party by covering windows with black trash bags.
For a silhouette effect, use wax paper to cover windows. Make cardboard cutouts in human or monster shapes and place in window. Back light for a dramatic effect.
Hang black trash bags in doorways and "shred" (cut in strips) for a neat walk through effect.
Stuffed dummies are fun for decoration but can be scary if rigged to move! Imagine a friend sitting next to a dummy and you casually make its arm move from pulling an unseen string from across the room!
Use colored chalk to accentuate outside paths and walkways with spooky warnings or sayings. Write on the outside of the path if possible to avoid unwanted chalk on carpets and surfaces.
Want great atmosphere for your kitchen or food area? Use scalpels instead of knifes. Place jars of fake body parts and colored liquids around with labels reading "poison" and "medical waste", etc. Place fake roaches in food bowls and fake rats on table.
